    My seven-year-old daughter sometimes watched The Prisoner with me and after one episode she announced, "I hate Number 6." I almost laughed, "Why?" "He always knows everything." "Why do you think that is?" "The midget butler hangs around Number Two all day then tells Six everything he said." SPOILER: Her hypothesis was right, the final scene is Six and the butler leaving the Village behind and driving straight to Six's former row house in town. <What do you want? Information in formation.>

    I remember seeing Splinter for sale after Star Wars and being stumped as a kid, excited but not a word said about it. The Marvel comics were way bigger. So the book was like the hushed up UFO sighting of books. Then people years later start bringing it up... mainly because Disney (and prequel Lucas) has butchered the mythic Star Wars vibe. They've taken the wrong path so we miss the better older Star Wars.

    In this particular case, I'm not sure there even is a conflict between Splinter and ESB. You could have them happen in just that order, couldn't you. If so, then as Vader would say, "There is no conflict."

    I've never been a fan of horror, but HP Lovecraft didn't write horror, at least as far as I'm concerned; he wrote 'dark fantasy'. Besides the Elder Gods, there were also the weird alien race of beings in At the Mountains of Madness, creatures not from another world, but a race that simply pre-dated humanity on earth. And my favorite is The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath.

    After over twenty years of working in mental health, sadly I have to say that there are literally thousands of people who given the right circumstances could do something terrible like this. That these people have access to books with disturbing content does not bother me. That these people could have access to guns, as they do in the US, is disturbing.

    What is really sad is that the OG Star Wars never won an award for it performances or screenplay. The technical achievements were not enough to make this film a success. Without the universal resonance of the story and the relatability of the performances as a foundation to build the technical elements on, it would have been a total flop. It's these two crucial ingredients that so many modern blockbuster films still get wrong, instead dropping storytelling and compelling character arcs in favour of effects, fights and spectacle.

    I'm so fucking happy you've highlighted this fact. He's recently written a brilliant new sci-fi short story called "Two talented basteds" IT was first contact all along. The Jaunt is one of the disturbing books I've ever read. (But he should of come up with something better than a cloud chamber 😂) Dark tower is more Sci-fi than fantasy. (Inter dimensional doors). I could go on.. yes it's soft sci-fi but it's still worth a read. P.s I'm also a Alastair Reynolds fan so I go both extremes.

    Ugh I used to read a lot of sci fi as a kid and Alan Dean Foster was the WORST. When compared to folks like Heinlein and Niven, he was complete garbage. I hated his books. Splinter of the Minds Eye was junk, the beginning of the horrible spinoff book craze that continues to this day. His writing was pedantic, formulaic and uninspired. Even as a pre-teen I recognized how trite and poor his narratives were. I don't recommend anyone waste any money on it.

      @@MediaDeathCult Huge King fan, so the debate is always there re Rage and his decision. A correct one I feel, because it was his own personal choice, befitting a sensible approach. Clearly it hasn't changed the horrendous issue playing out in the United States, so the argument remains about the folly of book banning but the video addresses the topic well. I really should run over to Discord, I'm missing out on the channel!!

    • @MediaDeathCult
      @MediaDeathCult 9 днів тому

      I didn't mention this in the video, and don't mean to throw fuel on the fire, but King was in a financial position to pull the book, it was never going to make a dent in his wallet, possibly quite the opposite. I wonder if the same decision would have been made if Rage was his only successful novel?

    • @OurRawHeart
      @OurRawHeart 9 днів тому

      @@MediaDeathCult no, I understand that, I was going off on a tangent slightly about that book and the debate in broader terms. It's true, would he have pulled it had it been that?, who knows. I wonder are there other novels that exist, similar to Rage, or even more divisive, that aren't on our wavelengths simply due to lack of popularity? Which are not linked in to the broader conversation with school shootings. A conversation for another day I suppose. (Patrick)

    Interesting discussion of Rage and why Stephen King had it banned because of all the horrible school shootings in American. I can see why he had to do it, and I respect his discision. It must play on his conscious that these disturbed kids read his book and decide to emulate the story. But that book is available on eBay like you mention -and I had a copy once. Stephen king earlier works are more darker and violent than his recent stuff. Personally, I prefer his old books and short stories.

    One might wonder what the effects would have been had it been made required reading. Sometimes bringing issues to light is better than keeping people in the dark about it. Might have made for easier identification of troubled individuals with open discussions. I'm more to leaning towards the devil you know is better than the devil you don't ideal.
